As you talk about Reading Olympics with your student, keep in mind:

  • Everything happens during the school day, so no transportation is needed.
  • Reading Olympics is good for students of all abilities. Teams work together, students can read with a partner or adult, and students can listen to audio books as well as reading print copies of books.
  • Students can read their Reading Olympics' books for their daily reading homework!
  • It's fun!

What is Reading Olympics?

Reading Olympics is a program designed to promote reading, teamwork, self confidence, and fun! A group of 4th and 5th grade students will work as a team to collectively read all 32 titles on the Reading Olympics list. The books range in reading ability from 3rd to 6th grade and in topics such as historical fiction, biography, nonfiction, mystery, and more. In the spring, the teams will gather for the Olympic competition. Teams will be asked questions about the books. Correct answers are awarded with points that add up to gold, silver, and bronze medals. The medals will be presented at the Olympic medal ceremony in front of the 4th and 5th grades. All of the participants will receive a medal for their hard work and dedication to reading!

Reading Olympics Time Commitment

Teams will be formed in October and will be led by teachers and coaches. They will meet about every other week during school from the fall through the spring. Each student will be responsible for reading a minimum of five to help fulfill the team goal of reading all 32 titles on the Reading Olympics book list.

Hesitant Reader?

The program is obviously wonderful for the young avid reader, but has incredible benefits for the hesitant reader as well. These books can be read aloud with a friend, by a parent, or a relative. The object is to have the students exposed to more quality literature and then enjoy the excitement of an academic competition!
